The lawyers and firms listed are on the Law Society's Children Panel and the Family Panel lists and have the necessary expertise to deal with cases involving children, grandparents or other family members who may consult them. The Law Society is the regulatory and representative body for approximately 116,000 solicitors in England and Wales. All solicitors on The Grandparents' Association list are on either the Children Panel or the Family Panel of solicitors.

The Children Panel consists of solicitors who deal with law that relates to public law Children Act proceedings such as applications for care orders by local authority social services departments, private law Children Act proceedings such as applications about the place of residence of or contact with children, and adoption.

The Family Panel deals with Family law, which covers all areas of law relating to relationships with partners, cohabitants (either same sex or opposite sex) and married couples. It deals with issues relating to the beginning and end of a relationship (e.g. marriage, divorce etc). They also deal with the law on relationship breakdown, divorce, capital and income settlements, and cases relating to private children law. They are also able to offer help to those suffering domestic violence.
